Red Dragons progress into next round of Bute Energy Welsh Cup

15 October 2023

Wrexham AFC produced a professional display to claim an incredible 13-0 victory against CPD Pwllheli at The Rec to progress into the second round of the Bute Welsh Energy Cup.

Ava Suckley scored six goals, with Carra Jones netting a brace; Rosie Hughes, Libby MacKenzie, Lili Jones, Lily Whitefoot and Mari Gibbard also all got on the scoresheet on a sunny afternoon in Pwllheli.

Steve Dale made four changes to the side that faced Cardiff City last weekend, as Charlotte Bolland, Katie Sharp, Libby MacKenzie and Ava Suckley all came into the starting XI.

The hosts got the match underway in north-west Wales, but Wrexham quickly asserted their dominance in the fixture.

It took just five minutes for Steve Dale’s side to gain the advantage, with Suckley getting her first senior goal this season.

MacKenzie did well to get a strike off from distance, but Pwllheli ‘keeper didn’t deal with it and spilled the ball into the path of Wrexham’s number 16 who smashed the ball into the top-left corner from an acute angle.

Just a minute later, Carra Jones doubled Wrexham’s advantage, producing a fantastic long-range effort that nestled into the top corner.

Lili Jones then went on to make it 3-0 to Wrexham, firing yet another long-range effort that Pwllheli’s Hayley Rees-Williams failed to deal with after 16 minutes.

Rosie Hughes made it 4-0 two minutes later as she recorded her first goal of the afternoon – Hughes’ 98th goal in a Wrexham shirt – latching onto Erin Lovett’s pass from the left-flank.

Suckley scored her second of the match to extend Wrexham’s advantage, with the 19-year-old’s strike taking a deflection on its way into the net with 26 minutes played.

Things continued to get better for the visitors, as Mari Gibbard headed in at the back-post from Lili Jones’ cross in the 35th minute.

Having already scored twice, Suckley continued in her fine run of form and made it 7-0 to Steve Dale’s side just three minutes after Gibbard’s header.

Minutes before half time, the Red Dragons rounded off a perfect first-half performance as Suckley recorded her fourth goal of the afternoon in the 43rd minute.

MacKenzie scored Wrexham’s first goal of the second half, having made a fantastic driving run before composing herself and firing past Rees-Williams after 54 minutes at The Rec.

Two minutes later, Carra Jones then doubled her tally for Dale’s side, firing from distance on the right to make it a double-digit lead for Wrexham.

Suckley scored her fifth goal of the match, heading home at the back post into an empty net from TJ Dickens’ cross in the 67th minute.

Wrexham’s young forward then made it 12-0 to the Red Dragons - scoring with 90 minutes played, and claiming a double hat-trick at the Rec.

Lily Whitefoot rounded the match off in added time as the substitute got on the scoresheet and claimed Wrexham’s 13th and final goal of the match.
