INTERVIEW | Phil Parkinson on gaining promotion

Parkinson reflects on back-to-back promotions

15 April 2024

Wrexham AFC manager Phil Parkinson expressed his pride after the Red Dragons secured promotion to Sky Bet League One with a 6-0 victory over Forest Green Rovers at the STōK Cae Ras.

The Boss was full of praise afterwards, stating: “I’m immensely proud of everybody connected with the Club because it is not easy to get back-to-back promotions.

“It’s been a huge team effort from everybody who works at the Club, the Owners, all the staff, every single player who has made a contribution and the supporters as well because they have stuck with us, and it hasn’t always been plain sailing.

“It’s been a tough league, and we had an indifferent start but through difficult times they stayed with us, kept the belief and they deserve this moment.

There’s a great connection with the supporters and the Club, I want all the supporters to savour this because it is very special.”

While it was the first time that the Club has gained back-to-back promotions, Parkinson has now masterminded a total of five promotions across the course of his managerial career.

Speaking about the achievement, he said: “It’s a very proud moment for myself and all the staff but we always speak about how everybody has to pull together in a football club to achieve days like this – we’ve certainly had that since I came in.

“It means so much because getting promotions and getting over the line at the end of the season is hard because everybody has wanted to beat us this season as we know, with the publicity that we got last year, teams have had that extra edge to try and beat us.”

Parkinson concluded by praising the efforts of his staff and the support that he has received so far during his time at the Club.

He explained: “To finish the job off in the style that we have done this week with the three wins is something I’m immensely proud of.

“As a manager you need really good people with you and above you, I’m very fortunate to have outstanding people with me.

“Being a manager at any football club can be tough at times, but I great people who are great at the job but also good solid characters with me. It’s a pleasure to come in every day and work.”
