Wrexham AFC Academy produce impressive display in Oldham

17 February 2024

Wrexham AFC’s Under-18 side returned to winning ways on the road in the EFL Youth Alliance North-West, as they claimed a dominant 3-0 victory over the Latics.

Goals from Callum Edwards, Anthony Connolly and Mikey Hayman gave the Red Dragons a vital three points, with last weekend’s game against Blackpool having been postponed due to a waterlogged pitch.

Wrexham’s first chance came after 17 minutes, as Harry Ashfield was fouled inside the box and the referee pointed to the spot.

From here, Edwards stepped up to take the spot kick, but the usually prolific forward couldn’t convert from the spot, much to the hosts’ delight.

Despite the Red Dragons’ battling spirit in Oldham, they struggled to convert any chances with the hosts standing firm in the first-half as both teams headed into the interval deadlocked.

The visitors returned into the second-half full of motivation, and it took them just past the hour mark to register the first goal of the match.

Hayman managed to find Edwards inside the box with a carefully placed cut-back after 61 minutes, and the forward made up for his previous spot-kick, firing straight into the top-left corner.

Twelve minutes later, it was Tom Kelly’s cross that found Connolly, who challenged his opposite number in an aerial battle that he eventually won, directing his header into the net before wheeling away in celebration as he doubled Wrexham’s lead.

Wrexham ensured that they travelled back to North Wales with all three points, as Hayman netted the Red Dragons’ third and final goal of the day after 76 minutes, heading home from a Edwards’ fantastic cross in the closing stages of the match.
