Mendy set to make his history as first Wrexham AFC player at AFCON

15 January 2024

Jacob Mendy could make his Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) debut this afternoon, when The Gambia take on tournament holders and favourites Senegal in their opening match in Group C.

If Mendy features in today's game, he would be the first player in our history to represent the Club at AFCON and the second player to play for the Club at a major tournament.

It’s only the second time that The Scorpions have qualified for the finals of the competition, after reaching the Quarter Finals in 2021.

They were the surprise package during the that tournament, only exiting the tournament to Semi-Finalists Cameroon.

Mendy made his debut prior to his selection against AFCON 2023 hosts Ivory Coast, in a 2-0 defeat at the Benjamin Mkapa National Stadium.

He played for 90 minutes in the 2026 FIFA World Cup Qualifying fixture, before being substituted just before the full-time whistle.

To prepare for the AFCON, The Scorpions held a training camp in Saudi Arabia before travelling back to The Gambia to receive the battle flag from their Vice President.

Should Mendy feature in today's game, he would be the first player in our history to represent the Club at AFCON and the second player to play for the Club at a major tournament.

The fixture against Senegal kicks-off at 14:00 GMT and you can watch the game live on Sky Sports Main Event and Sky Sports Football in the UK and Ireland.
