PREVIEW | The New Saints vs Wrexham

The northern derby sees two sides who suffered losses at the weekend looking to get back on track

24 January 2024

The Adran Premier's northern neighbours have plenty riding on this match. Standing 3rd and 4th as the battle to be on the right side of the mid-season split reaching its conclusion, three points for either side would be invaluable.

THE WREXHAM ANGLE

With our final three games of the opening phase of the season at The Rock, Wrexham's target of a top four place is within range. In fact, regardless of the result at Park Hall, a win against Aberystwyth Town on Sunday will guarantee a place in the championship stage of the season.

However, after such an impressive first season in the Adran Premier, our sights are set higher than that, which is why this game is so important. Victory in this game in hand over the rest of the current top four, followed by a continuation of our strong home form, will set us up nicely for the final stage and keep second-placed Swansea City within range.

Last Sunday's defeat at Cardiff hurt, but showed progression from the start of the season. With Erin Lovett and Rosie Hughes able to contribute from the bench, Steve Dale will hope to have more selection options as his injury worries ease.

LAST TIME WE MET

THE VIEW FROM THE OTHER SIDE

As TNS fight for a top four place, they need to shrug off a disappointing couple of results. A home defeat to Cardiff City is absolutely no disgrace, but to concede six goals in the process will have been a blow. Worse, though, was last Sunday's 4-1 loss at Barry. Their opponents have improved notably in recent weeks, but such a comprehensive result was a real shock. Conceding 10 goals in 2 games put a dent in a previously sound defensive record too: the only side in the division which have conceded more than TNS is Barry.

The postponement of last Sunday's game between Aberystwyth Town and Cardiff Met didn't make the picture any clearer for TNS. They are the two sides with a chance of catching The New Saints, although Met will need to defy the odds, as they stand 5 points off fourth place with 9 points left to play for.

Town are a greater threat, standing 4 points short of TNS with a game in hand. They have a tough run-in, but if they can stay in touch with 4th place, they will host the final game of the opening phase - against The New Saints!
