PREVIEW | Wrexham AFC vs Aberystwyth Town

For Wrexham the task is clear: finish as high up as possible before the split

27 January 2024

Making the mid-season split in the top four was always the ambitious goal for Wrexham, and Steve Dale's side have exceeded expectations.

THE WREXHAM ANGLE

Nobody can doubt this Wrexham side's heart, and they drew deeply on their character to pull off a dramatic 3-2 win against local rivals TNS. Just 3 days after the bruising defeat at Cardiff, they went 2-0 down after just 11 minutes, but roared back brilliantly to claim a 3-2 win.

Dale took the opportunity to rotate his team, meaning regulars like TJ Dickens and Rebecca Pritchard were able to take a break from the starting line-up. Erin Lovett returned to make her first start since late October,

LAST TIME WE MET

THE VIEW FROM THE OTHER SIDE

Aberystwyth are chasing TNS for that precious fourth spot in the table, but need a strong finish to achieve that goal. They stand 4 points behind The New Saints with 2 games in hand, Town got off to a magnificent start to the season, and were unbeaten after 4 games. Part of that run was their outstanding result of the season, as they managed a draw against Cardiff City, the only points the champions have dropped so far this season!

However, they lost their unbeaten record at home to Wrexham, despite taking an early lead, and that was the beginning of a disappointing run of results: one win, one draw and four defeats mean they've playing catch-up in the pursuit of a top 4 finish. There have been a couple of costly slips during that run: the loss of a 2-0 lead at TNS in a game which ended in a 4-3 defeat could turn out to be crucial, while Town's last match saw them needed a late goal to secure a draw against a Pontypridd side who were earning their first point of the season.

However, Aberystwyth are in a position to set up a dramatic conclusion to the opening phase of the season. TNS have 2 matches left: the first is a tricky proposition at Swansea, and then they end the season at Aberystwyth! Town therefore have a terrific chance to set up a massive final day showdown and get into the top 4.
