Red Dragons claim hard-fought victory over the Seasiders

28 January 2024

Carra Jones' 54th minute strike led Wrexham a 1-0 victory over Aberystwyth Town at The Rock, meaning that the Red Dragons have secured at least a third-placed finish in Phase One of the Genero Adran Premier.

Having claimed the cross-border bragging rights earlier this week, Steve Dale's side headed into the match hopeful of making it back-to-back wins to round off a fantastic response to disappointment in South Wales last weekend.

His side were aided in the knowledge that a point against the Seasiders was enough to secure them at least a third-placed finish in Phase One of the Genero Adran Premier with two matches still to play at the Rock against Pontypridd United and Cardiff Met.

Aberystwyth made the trip from West Wales hopeful of keeping their top four ambitions alive, knowing that games are running out to catch top-four rivals TNS.

The visitors started strongly, as captain Amy Jenkins quickly made life difficult for the Wrexham backline early-on.

Rosie Hughes, starting her second match in as many games, led the line ferociously, pressing with intent and determination.

The forward created her first chance after just five minutes, and was unlucky not to break the deadlock on the counter-attack, but her deft finish drifted just wide of the post.

Carra Jones then went on to test the visitors with an effort of her own, as she drifted in from the right-flank and unleashed an effort from 30-yards-out that struck the post.

Both sides battled away in the opening 30 minutes, with Jenkins throwing everything at the ball in Wrexham’s box to try and get an all-important opener.

Aberystwyth’s Farnes was kept busy, having made important stops to deny Amber Lightfoot and Lili Jones from outside the box, but Wrexham were forced to go into the interval with the scores level.

Having been kept at bay in the first half, the visitors forced Del Morgan into a fantastic reflex save as she reacted quickly to deny Moralee-Hughes from close-range with her feet in the 48th minute.

Six minutes later, Carra Jones broke the deadlock for Steve Dale’s side, much to the home supporters’ delight.

Lili Jones found Hughes with a well-timed set piece, and the striker did well to head across goal, leaving Carra Jones with an inviting ball to head home for the Red Dragons.

The Seasiders battled and threw everything at the match in the closing stages, as they hurried up the pitch to try and salvage a late point at The Rock.

Rebecca Pritchard went close with just five minutes remaining, but it wasn’t to be, as she couldn't quite manage to get the required finish inside the box under immense pressure.

It didn’t matter though, as Wrexham held on for a massive victory, which secured their credentials as a top-four side ahead of Phase Two of the Genero Adran Premier.
