Wrexham overcome resilient Barry side to claim victory

14 January 2024

Wrexham AFC recorded their first league win of 2024, as Ava Suckley’s 68th minute goal was enough for the Red Dragons to claim a 1-0 win over Barry Town United at The Rock.

Steve Dale made a change of shape against the Linnets, with Wrexham moving to a 3-5-2 formation from the off.

Both sides started quickly in North Wales, a repeat of the last meeting between the teams in 2023 at Jenner Park.

Lili Jones, who lined-up at centre-back, tried her luck from distance in the 12th minute as her right-footed effort drifted over Erin Brennan’s goal to the keeper’s relief.

While Wrexham enjoyed the large majority of possession in the opening stages of the match, Barry grew into proceedings and gradually improved as the clock ticked on.

New signing Danielle Broadhurst caused the Red Dragons a number of problems in the middle of the pitch, and was a key part of Linnets’ attack further up the pitch.

Wrexham’s best chance came in the 41st minute, when Ava Suckley was released by Rebecca Pritchard behind the Barry backline – however the official raised their flag and ruled her offside.

Del Morgan made a brilliant save to deny the visitors in added-time, tipping a long-range drive from Chloe Tiley over the crossbar to ensure the sides went into the interval level.

Suckley had a penalty shout early into the second half as she was brought down, but her appeals were waved away

Then Carra Jones came close to finally netting the first goal of the afternoon in the 56th minute, but her header glanced over from close-range.

Eventually though, the hosts’ efforts were rewarded, as Suckley popped up in a crowded box to bundle the ball into the net at a crucial time in the match to give Wrexham the advantage after 67 minutes.

Barry Town came back at the Red Dragons, as they brought on the experienced Catherine Walsh up top, having signed the number 14 ahead of the match.

Neither side could settle in the final stages of the game, as the pressure ramped up within the Rock.

It was a tense final few minutes in added time, as Walsh fired a free-kick which found it’s way to the back post, but Wrexham held on to claim another crucial victory in their road to claiming a top four spot.
