Wrexham AFC fell to a battling 3-2 defeat against Morecambe’s Under-18 side, as the Shrimps scored a late winner to claim victory at Colliers Park.
Having already won two matches so far since the start of 2024, the young Red Dragons returned to face a Morecambe side who narrowly knocked Wrexham out of the FA Youth Cup in November.
The hosts started strongly in North Wales, looking to build upon their solid run of form with another positive result against the Shrimpers.
James Rainbird found Harry Ashfield with a deft flick after the 9th minute, and Ashfield drove onto the pass, glided onto the ball and unleashed a sublime finish into the top corner past Pedley.
Wrexham then went on to double their advantage just four minutes later, as Harry Dean rose highest to head home into the bottom corner from Alex Moore’s free-kick.
However, the visitors pulled a goal back in the 33rd minute from the spot, as Fairclough halved the deficit with his penalty to give Morecambe hope of a comeback prior to the interval.
After the break, Williams leveled the scores for the opposition after 51 minutes, capitalising on a clinical counter-attack.
Fox-Akande then completed the comeback for Morecambe, firing home his side’s third goal to hand Wrexham a cruel late defeat in North Wales.
