Last minute defeat on home turf leaves Red Dragons empty-handed

25 March 2024

Wrexham AFC Women suffered a closing stage defeat with a goal for Swansea City in added time at the STōK Cae Ras.

A spectacular long-ranged shot from Lili Jones opened the scoring in the spring sunshine as the ball flew over the Swan’s keeper and fell perfectly into the net. Minutes later however, Swansea found themselves with a lifeline – a penalty which Robyn Pinder was able to convert – levelling the game before half-time.

The Red Dragons weren’t to have it all their way on the STōK Cae Ras pitch – a second goal for the Swans came just nine minutes into the second-half.

Resurgent Wrexham responded well, however, with Rosie Hughes heading it home to level the score in the 81st minute. As the hosts pushed for a winner, however, Ellie Lake’s cross bounced straight through in stoppage time to restore Swansea’s lead.

It meant another frustrating defeat in a game in which the Red Dragons arguably deserved more – such has been the pattern in Phase Two so far.
