INTERVIEW | Steve Dale ahead of Cardiff City

Manager speaks ahead of return to the Rock

17 March 2024

Steve Dale has emphasised the importance of his side getting a ‘good result’ against Cardiff City at the Rock in Genero Adran Premier action.

Speaking ahead of the match, the manager said: “It’s a big game. I am really excited, and they are probably one of the best teams that we have come against this season.

“You can see why they are so successful and why they are rightly sitting in first position this season, but every time that we have played them, we have been competitive.

“We have competed very well and we’re looking forward to putting our record against them right and getting a good result against Cardiff.”

While last weekend provided disappointment for the Red Dragons, Dale’s side can take confidence from their performance against Swansea, having put in a battling display in South Wales.

“It gives us a lot of hope and opportunities to go and get the right result on Sunday. Going 1-0 down early on, the way that we responded directly from kick-off and got a goal is testament to what the group are about this year.

“They’ve knuckled down and really bought in to what we’re trying to do week in and week out. We always change the game plan, and there is always a new plan, but the squad always buy in to what we’re doing and that’s why we’ve been so successful this season and got the results that we have done.”

The manager is looking forward to getting back to home comforts, as his side return to the Rock for the first time in Phase Two.

He said: “It's massive, once the crowd get behind you it gives the girls a massive lift. I still believe that the crowd played a massive part in us getting a point against Swansea.

“I don’t think they were expecting to go to an environment the way that it was and the performance that we put in as well helped to spur the crowd on which in turn kept motivating us to keep going.

“It is massive that we get that backing from the home fans, as that gives us that extra 10% to get the result on the pitch.”

While the reigning league champions are set to be a tough test for the Red Dragons, Dale emphasised the importance of getting a result to build confidence.

He explained: “We are not far away, both teams, Cardiff and Swansea have been complimentary in the way that we set up.

“However, it’s important that we get a good result on Sunday to give the girls confidence ahead of the Bute Energy Welsh Cup final. It’s also important that we build momentum, coming into another big match against Swansea City at the STōK Cae Ras.”
