INTERVIEW | Steve Dale ahead of Swansea City

Manager speaks ahead of South Wales trip

10 March 2024

Wrexham AFC Women manager Steve Dale revealed that the team is in good spirits, following on from their Bute Energy Welsh Cup semi-final success ahead of their Genero Adran Premier clash against Swansea City.

The Red Dragons kick-off Phase Two against the six-time league champions, with Wrexham looking to claim their first win against the Swans this season.

Ahead of the match, reflecting back on last Sunday, he said: “It was a fantastic occasion - it’s a really prestigious competition within Wales so it was something that we have targeted all season to have a really good cup run. It was a fantastic feeling to get it over the line with a winner.

“The mood in camp has been fantastic this week, the girls are really on a high and we’re looking forward to bringing that motivation into the games that we have coming up.”

Previous meetings against the South Wales outfit have always been close, with Wrexham having taken the lead before falling to a 2-1 win at the Swansea.com Stadium earlier this season.

Dale admitted: “Both games have been really tight. Of course, we were really disappointed not to take all three points in the home game, it was a fantastic advert for the league as the opening game of the season.

“There was probably more pressure on us as we were going into that game a little bit unknown and we put on a fantastic performance and were unlucky to not get all three points.

“We had a lot of positives to come from those matches, but we are a better team now and have come a long way since the opening stages of the season. We’re going there full of confidence ready for a tough game but hoping for a result.”

Looking back at the First Phase of the season, Dale expressed that there were lessons to be taken ahead of a tough run of fixtures until the end of the campaign.

He said: “It is going to be tough as you’re playing the best three other teams at this stage of the season, so every game is going to be difficult.

“We can take a lot of positives from both performances against Cardiff and Swansea. Although we haven’t managed to beat either side, there’s not been much in it and there’s been fine margins.

“This is the position that we wanted to be in and it gives us a good platform to build on for next season to see where we are and how far away we actually are from them.

“To get into the top four was fantastic, we want to build on that - we are not going to down tools and say that we have achieved what we have achieved as we still have points to play for and have an opportunity to express ourselves.”
