U18 REPORT | Wrexham AFC 4-1 Accrington Stanley

Young Red Dragons continue impressive form with home success

2 March 2024

Wrexham AFC’s Under-18 side claimed another impressive victory in EFL Youth Alliance action, as they overcame Accrington Stanley to claim a 4-1 win.

Harry Ashfield, Aaron James, Mikey Hayman and Callum Edwards all got on the scoresheet as the Red Dragons continued to put on an impressive display offensively - having scored five goals on the road at Bolton last weekend.

The hosts opened the scoring after 25 minutes, as Ashfield was tripped up in the box and the referee pointed straight to the spot. The 17-year-old stepped up to take the spot kick, and he calmly converted from the spot, firing well into the Accrington net.

Just five minutes later the lead was doubled as a well-worked corner routine found Aaron James, who did well to find himself unmarked at the back-post before heading home after 30 minutes.

Accrington managed to get a goal back in the 33rd minute, as a good strike from the edge of the box found the bottom corner and nestled into the net.

With a minute to go until the interval, Wrexham restored their two-goal advantage just before the break as Mikey Hayman did excellently to smash the ball home into the bottom-left corner and give his side a 3-1 lead at half-time.

Wrexham returned in the second-half with similar desire and fight, and they eventually were totally out of sight in the 68th minute as Callum Edwards netted the final goal of the afternoon.

Edwards, who has made a name for himself as a keen goalscorer this season, latched onto a fantastic ball in behind from Mikey Hayman before firing well past Accrington’s keeper to secure all three points for the young Red Dragons.
