Wrexham get first taste of match action at Manchester City

4 May 2024

Wrexham AFC’s Powerchair footballers enjoyed their first taste of match action, travelling to Manchester to take on a Manchester City team at the East Manchester Academy.

Set up in 2021, becoming Wales’ first ever powerchair team in the process, Wrexham meet every Friday evening at the Wrexham University Sports Centre.

And in another first for the Club, four players – Morgan Jones, Caio Jones, Jamie Wiffen and Carson Jones – became the first to represent Wrexham in a match against another team.

To cap a memorable day, Wrexham won the match 4-3.

Disability Liaison Officer Kerry Evans said: “We were delighted to be invited to our first Powerchair football friendly with Manchester City’s powerchair football team.

“It was a fantastic occasion and the players did Wrexham AFC proud, winning 4-3. Our players really enjoyed the experience, even getting to partake in the new style powerchairs thanks to Manchester City.

“We have come away with valuable experience and knowledge and hope this is the beginning of a very special future and more opportunities for powerchair football at Wrexham AFC.

“We have to thank Jack Ward, Paul Kelly and Sean Dwyer at City in the Community for organising the day, and inviting us; it’s been a fantastic experience and we really cannot thank them enough for their hospitality and the opportunity.”
