Following on from the retained list yesterday, Wrexham AFC announce that we have cancelled Sam Wedgbury’s contract by mutual consent.

Manager Sam Ricketts said, “I have been speaking with all the players who we have under contract to get people ready for next seasons challenge and I only want players who are 100% committed to that journey.

“Having spoken to Sam it was clear that he has been struggling with the distance of travel in for training and that he could not guarantee me the level of commitment for next season we will require.

“It was a tough decision to let Sam leave but we understand the reasons for him wanting to move back home and have made the decision in the best interest of the club and the player.

“Sam has been a popular member of the squad with fans and players alike and on behalf of the club I’d like to thank him for his fine contribution to the club and wish him the very best for the future.”

Sam Wedgbury spoke to the club website and said, “I’ve always had a great relationship with the Wrexham fans and it’s been a privilege to play for them at the Racecourse.

“Living in Sheffield the travel across to Wrexham for training has become increasingly difficult for me, following on from several seasons living away from the family home.

“I really enjoyed my time at the club and hope that the fans will understand my reasons for wanting to move back home on a permanent basis.

“I want to thank Sam Ricketts for the way in which he has handled the situation and I hope that Wrexham AFC can gain promotion back to the Football league where the club belongs.”

Sam switched to the Racecourse from Forest Green Rovers a year ago and was a regular in our side, playing 42 games for the club and scoring one goal – that spectacular late effort at home to Guiseley.

Born in the West Midlands, the 29-year-old came though the ranks with Sheffield United, after being spotted as junior with Worcester City. He then played over 100 times for Macclesfield Town, before a short period with Stevenage and then joining FGR in 2014.

Sam is also getting married this summer, and we wish both Alice and Sam well for the approaching ceremony and their future life together.

In addition, Wrexham AFC have agreed to cancel the contract of Head of Physical Performance Nick Barnett early. Nick leaves us with our best wishes for his future career and thanks for all his efforts in 2017/18 season
