An incredible match from a run which ended in the quarter-finals. Wrexham had already faced First Division Bristol City in the League Cup that season, winning 1-0 at The Racecourse. However, it looked like a repeat upset wasn't on the cards when Kevin Mabbutt and Tom Ritchie put City 2-0 up after 13 minutes.
However, Arfon Griffths' side bounced back swiftly. Bobby Shinton pulled a goal back almost immediately, and a spectacular Geoff Merrick own goal meant the game was level again before the half hour mark.
After the break Dixie McNeil and Shinton gave Wrexham a 4-2 lead which they held with seven minutes left. However, Peter Cormack reduced the deficit and, in the last minute, Mabbutt grabbed the goal which took the game to a replay.
However, that goal served merely as a temporary reprieve for City, as first half goals from McNeil, Graham Whittle and Mickey Thomas secured a 3-0 win.
