After recently picking up the WST Dave Lovett Unsung Hero Award at the Wrexham AFC Player of the Season dinner, we are delighted that David Mainwaring has also won April’s 'Volunteer of the Month' from the National League.
The Wrexham Supporters Trust want the Club to be a community club; accessible to all and this is encapsulated by their Dementia Friends programme.
This follows up from an idea conceived in Scotland to bring people living with Alzheimer’s disease together through football; reminiscing about past matches and using images and memorabilia to stimulate memories and improve wellbeing.
David, whose mother had the disease so had witnessed it first-hand, became a befriending volunteer and has since set up training groups to help others understand how people (with dementia themselves or family or friends who have it) are affected, and how they can confidently contribute to life in the community.
The Club have received official status form the Alzheimer’s Society and Dave has trained stewards, the first team squad and board members at the Club to become Dementia Friends.
Passionate about his work, Dave runs groups, who meet regularly at the Racecourse, without looking for any gratitude, and the Club want his incredible determination and commitment to be recognised in this often-overlooked area of football.
