The club can confirm the return of central defender Manny Smith on a two-year deal, following his release by fellow Vanarama National League club Gateshead. Who have been good enough to let the Halesowen-based player leave his contract with them early, due to family reasons.

The following is a statement issued by the International Stadium side:

Defender Manny Smith has returned to former club Wrexham after his contract at Gateshead FC was cancelled on compassionate grounds.

Smith joined the Tynesiders from the Welsh outfit last summer and enjoyed an impressive first season at the International Stadium, scoring five times and picking up five Man of the Match awards in his 47 appearances for the club.

However, due to personal reasons, Gateshead Football Club have agreed to cancel the 28-year-old centre-back's contract, allowing him to be closer to home with the Dragons.

It was an incredibly tough decision to let a player like Manny leave the Gateshead under such circumstances and we'd like to thank him for his fine contributions to the club and wish him the very best for the future.

We would like to welcome Manny back to the Racecourse and wish him well in his second spell as a Red.

He initially arrived at the Racecourse in 2014, following lengthy spell with Walsall and then a two-year stay with Notts County.

Voted as Wrexham’s Player of the Year in 2015, after not missing a minute of action during his first season in Wales. Yet just 12 months later, he was allowed to leave Wrexham without being offered a new deal and opted to head north to join the Heed.

On Tyneside, he once again teamed up with his former Wrexham team mate Jamal Fyfield and ex-Tranmere man Liam Hogan to help the locals into a top ten finish, although hopes of a play-off place slipped away in the last few weeks of the season.

This was a bold decision taken by Gateshead, but one made with the best interests of the player in mind and they deserve much praise for reaching the conclusion they did.
