AFC Telford United v Wrexham
Location: New Bucks Head
Competition: Pre-Season Friendly
As we move right in to the thick of it this summer we roll across the border for the first time to take on Shropshire opposition in AFC Telford United.
This will be Wrexham’s fifth pre-season friendly of the summer and currently remain unbeaten. We were last in action on Tuesday as Mike Fondop’s header earned the Dragons a draw against Bangor City. It followed the game’s opening goal and a first of the summer from Chris Holroyd. Beforehand we’d jetted out to Portugal where we drew by the same scoreline at the Estadio Algarve against Louletano, Fondop scoring once more along with Nicky Deverdics. Our opening two games both ended in victories over Lex XI and Airbus UK Broughton.
AFC Telford United come into the game on the back of two defeats to two different calibres of opposition. They faced Barwell losing out by a single goal after facing EFL Championship side Aston Villa a week ago. These defeats followed convincing victories over Market Drayton (4-0) and Ellesmere Rangers (6-0).
Wrexham striker Mike Fondop is full of confidence at the moment with three goals in as many games this pre-season. ‘Big Mike’ signed for the Dragons this summer from Guiseley and has starting in exactly the right fashion as he progressed this pre-season. There have been plenty of youngsters in the Wrexham side this summer and they will be looking to remain in the side for as long as possible to give themselves a fighting chance to be the next youth product into the first-team next season. The likes of Bobby Beaumont, Matt Sargent and Ryan Williams all played alongside senior pros again on Tuesday at Nantporth.
Telford have a number of players familiar to Wrexham supporters including two former reds in the ranks. Ross White came through the academy at the Racecourse before moving on in 2016. The 22-year old initially signed for Southport before joining the Bucks last season. Goalkeeper Callum Preston who made an appearance on non-contract terms for ourselves last season is also currently with United. Strikers Amari Morgan-Smith and Matthew Barnes-Homer are also well known as former strikers of the National League who know how to grab a goal or two.
Last time we met came in 2016 as we travelled to Shropshire for a pre-season friendly. Wrexham took a 3-0 lead during the midweek meeting through goals from Paul Rutherford and a double from Michael Bakare. But late on the Bucks pulled two back but it wouldn’t be enough.
The last time we met in the league was in the 2014/15 season on the final day where goals from Dean Keates and Luke Waterfall saw the Dragons run out 2-1 victors whilst the last time we faced off in North Wales it was an afternoon to forget. The visitors steamrolled 10-man Wrexham ending the game four to the good in a desperate display.
Sam Ricketts will assess knocks to Christian Dibble, Kevin Roberts, Shaun Pearson and Akil Wright.
