Wrexham v Forest Green Rovers
Location: My Racecourse
Competition: Pre-Season Friendly
It comes around so quickly once it gets started and now after over a month of preparation we've reached our final pre-season friendly of the summer, and the first at the Racecourse in three years.
Wrexham were last in action on Tuesday night when we travelled to Cheshire to face Macclesfield Town. It was an improved performence from the reds who initially took the lead in the first-half through Manny Smith before Harry Smith pulled the home side level late on to end the match 1-1. Beforehand we fell to a 3-1 defeat to AFC Telford, our only defeat of the summer.
Forest Green travel to North Wales on the back of a 1-3 victory over Hereford FC at Edgar Street on Tuesday. Goals from Farrend Dawson and a Rueban Reid double secured the win. That made it back-to-back wins after securing a 1-0 victory over Bristol Rovers. Entertainment has certainly been the name of the game for Rovers this summer, who earlier this month played out a 6-6 draw with National League South side Weston-super-Mare.
Wrexham this week secured a first professional contract for young centre-half Doug Tharme and now the centre of excellence product will be looking to kick on. He's played a part in recent weeks and now the physical defender will be looking to push experienced centre-backs Shaun Pearson and Manny Smith.
FGR striker Christian Doidge has been hot property in Nailsworth having taken to the Rovers frontline like a duck to water since rising through the ranks. The forward began in humble beginnings in the Welsh love leagues with the likes of Cwmbran Celtic and eventually made it up to the Welsh Premier League. Since his move into the English system, he made his way to Gloucestershire and has 40 goals in just over 70 appearances in the National League and League Two.
Last time we met came in the 2016/17 season at the New Lawn, where a rampant Rovers ran out 3-0 winners in a convincing performance. Our last match-up at the Racecourse though was a different story as it was the Dragons who stole the show with a 3-1 win through Shaun Harrard and a Gerry McDonagh brace. Over 18 games Wrexham have won eight, Forest Green have won four and we've drawn the other six games.
Sam Ricketts will be assessing Rekeil Pyke, Nicky Deverdics and Shaun Pearson ahead of this weekend's game.
