Report by Tom Crofts:
Wrexham AFC Women battled to a hard fought 2-2 draw against Amlwch Ladies at Lon Bach this afternoon to keep pressure at the top of the table.
A depleted Wrexham side endured the worst possible start to the match as three minutes into the match, Meinir Thomas found herself free in the box to tuck in a great corner to put the hosts one up.
Wrexham, however, responded perfectly with a flurry of attacks from the Dragons nearly resulting in an equaliser with Savannah Palin having her shot blocked and Ellie Quayle’s cross being spilled by Pritchard in the Amlwch goal but she managed to recover it.
Deputy goalkeeper Alex Jones, filling in for the injured Kat Jones, pulled off an excellent save as Meinir Thomas found herself through on goal and Alex Jones managed to rush the attacker and stop the effort, taking a knee to her head for her troubles but she emerged unscathed.
Wrexham dominated the half but found it difficult to break down a stubborn Amlwch defence but they could only weather the storm for so long and the breakthrough came eight minutes from the half.
Top goal scorer Savannah Palin made herself space down the right and Kim Dutton found her with an excellent pass which cut through the defence and she chipped it over the keeper’s head to equalise the game for the Dragons.
Half Time – Amlwch 1-1 Wrexham
Wrexham continued to dominate the game into the second half however they had to contend with the long range passing from Amlwch which caused a few issues considering the windy conditions.
In the 65th minute, Amlwch punished Wrexham’s high line as they chased a winner and Shannon Thomas managed to beat the offside trap and slide the ball home to put the hosts back in the ascendency.
Three minutes later though, Savannah Palin struck again as she latched onto a scuffed shot from Richards to slot it home and put the Dragons back in the game.
Wrexham pushed for a winner but their attacks were hampered by the injury to Lily Clifton-Stringer after a late challenge on her, forcing Wrexham down to 10 players for the remainder of the game.
Right at the death, Wrexham nearly came home with three points after Lauren Reese delivered an excellent cross into the box for Richards but she just couldn’t get a head on it.
It was a very spirited display from Wrexham who twice came from behind to come home with a point and their attention will now turn to next week when they play Rhyl Reserves back at Afoneitha Road.
