Wrexham AFC Women staged a second half comeback to share the spoils in Denbighshire today with the Dragons drawing 2-2 with local rivals Corwen FC.
Things did not go to plan for Luke Wynne’s side as within the first minute, Megan Buckley slipped on the slick surface whilst trying to control the ball and Thalia Christian-McGrail pounced on the mistake, one on one with the keeper and she tucked it away to open the scoring.
It seemed to go from bad to worse as in the fifth minute, a corner whipped in to the 6-yard box is poked home by the Corwen Number 7 Seren Williams to double the lead for the hosts.
Wrexham, however, did not let this deter them and the Dragons started to make chances for themselves and regain control of the game to ensure they could get back into the tie. A great free kick into the box by Sarah Cowell was knocked just wide at the 16th minute mark.
For the ensuing quarter of an hour, Wrexham dominated the game and looked to carve more chances for themselves without leaving themselves short at the back as the pace of Seren Williams was a threat up top for Corwen.
In the last 10 minutes of the first half, Lauren Reese and Morgan Churchill both came close to getting Wrexham back into the game as their efforts were saved well by the keeper.
HALF TIME - CORWEN FC WOMEN 2-0 WREXHAM AFC WOMEN
Wrexham made a double switch at half time with Kim Dutton and Savannah Palin replacing Ellie Quaiye and Megan Buckley.
Kim Dutton turned super sub as two minutes into the second half, she reduced the deficit to one goal after an excellent shot from distance, which nestled sweetly into the top corner, a real postage stamp effort!
Wrexham turned the screw as they forced the play higher up the field and pressured the shaky Corwen back line. Jodie Richards capitalised on a mistake from the Corwen back line, but her snapshot was right at the gloves of Ellen Ford in the Corwen goal.
The intense pressure finally told for Wrexham as Morgan Churchill, recently signed to the first team, hit a powerful shot at the keeper and she spilled it over her line, which put Wrexham back level with their hosts.
However, Corwen showed why they shouldn’t be taken lightly around five minutes later, as Amy Davies couldn’t release the ball out of her feet and Seren Williams one-on-one with Kat Jones tried to tuck it under the keeper but Jones pulled off a “Cat-Like” save to deny Williams her second of the afternoon.
Wrexham tried to push for the winner with Teleri Williams being substituted on for Jodie Richards, which pushed Lauren Reese further forward to look for the decider.
Corwen sat deeper to cope with the onslaught and this stifled the Reds' attack somewhat, as the game ended in a 2-2 draw.
