Wrexham extended their early lead at the top of the Vanarama National League with a 1-3 victory against Eastleigh in Hampshire.

Centre-back Manny Smith opened the scoring for the Dragons in the 8th minute when he poked home an excellent free-kick by Luke Summerfield added to by an own goal from another Summerfield delivery making it 0-2 on 13 minutes before half-time.

In the second-half Wrexham started brightly with Eastleigh adding pressure mid-way through the half. After the Spitfires went down to 10-men when second-half sub Andrew Boyce was given a second yellow, they pulled one back through Paul McCallum who tucked his effort home making it 1-2.

But it was Wrexham striker Mike Fondop who made it 1-3 from a tight angle off the post in the 81st minute and in turn secured the three-points for the visitors.

An unchanged Wrexham side from the team named that beat Maidenhead United 0-2 mid-week went to work early on against an Eastleigh side who have suffered two defeats and two wins in their opening matches.

As early as the fourth minute Wrexham were placing pressure on the Spitfires. Rekeil Pyke's effort was saved by Eastleigh stopper Graham Stack leading to a second successive corner.

Although the corner came to nothing, Akil Wright burst forward two minutes later taking the ball past Chris Zebroski before being fouled 30-yards out.

On the eighth minute, Summerfield's pin-point free-kick was forced home by Manny Smith giving Wrexham a 0-1 lead.

Just five minutes later, Wrexham found themselves two-up. Summerfield again integral to the build up whipping in a superb ball which was nodded in to his own net by Alex Wynter.

Wrexham continued to press on for the rest of the half, while Eastleigh tried to up the intensity and the next real opportunity came in the 34th minute, when Fondop's header was saved by Stack.

Half-time: Eastleigh 0-2 Wrexham

Wrexham started the second half by putting Eastleigh under pressure from the off. In the 47th minute Wrexham won a free-kick, again delivered by Summerfield looking for Pyke before Eastleigh cleared their lines.

In the 51st minute, Wrexham came very close to adding a deserved third. Jordan Maguire-Drew hit the bar with a fantastic free-kick from around 25-yards out.

Six minutes later and Eastleigh reminded Wrexham that they were still in the game, as after some pressure they won a corner which Lainton punched strongly away.

Half-time Eastleigh substitute Andrew Boyce added some extra presence for a time as Eastleigh went three at the back and tried to push on at the Wrexham back-line. He won a number of corners after the 58th minute which Lainton and the back-four dealt with nicely, although he was booked for a reckless trip on Maguire-Drew.

Nicky Deverdics was introduced on the hour but in the 63rd minute Boyce was given his marching orders for a second yellow, this the second game in a row against Wrexham that the defender has been sent off in, this time for bringing Fondop down who was surely through one-on-one with Stack.

In the 67th minute, the 10-men pulled one back, Wrexham conceded their first goal of the season when Paul McCallum turned neatly just on the outside of the area and tucked the ball home past Lainton for 1-2.

Wrexham introduced last season's top-scorer Chris Holroyd with 20 minutes to go and Stuart Beavon was sent on after 74th minutes to counter Eastleigh's valiant charge.

Beavon almost had an immediate impact when Fondop picked out the front-man on-loan from Coventry City, who pulled his shot wide of Stack's goal.

Although it was Fondop who secured the points for Wrexham when he made it 1-3 on the break in the 81st minute. He turned Reda Johnson inside out and from an outrageous angle placed his shot in off the Eastleigh post.

The Spitfires piled forward for the remainder of time, but Wrexham closed the game out for another excellent victory on the road.
