Wrexham AFC Women started off their Supplementary Cup campaign off in fine fashion after beating higher level opponents Northop Hall Ladies FC 3-1 in Shotton today.
Wrexham got off to a flying start with Dutton having a shot parried by the keeper in the first minute, nearly pushing it into the pash of the onrushing Jodie Richards but the danger was cleared.
Northop tried to assert their dominance with Evans getting free and firing towards the top corner but the returning Kat Jones got up well to palm the ball away.
Wrexham dominated vast periods of the first half however the wintry and blustery conditions made it very difficult to get any sort of passage of play together.
35 minutes in, Williams had an excellent chance for Wrexham but her shot was smothered well by Thomas in goal.
Five minutes from the break, Jones had to be called upon again after a header destined for the goal was saved excellently.
HALF TIME – Northop Hall Ladies 0-0 Wrexham AFC Women
Luke Wynne’s half time team talk paid dividends as two minutes into the second half, Lauren Reese fired in an excellent effort from range to put the Dragons up.
Six minutes later, it should have been two as Reese picks out Churchill at the back post but her effort was chipped over the bar.
Just over the hour mark, Reese again forced a great save from Thomas in the Northop goal as her effort is palmed away.
Northop showed resilience to capitalise on Wrexham’s confidence going forward showed as a quick counter attack set up Davies as she tucked it away under an onrushing Kat Jones.
However, at periods of pressure such as these it is up to your goalscorers to get you back in the lead and that is what Lauren Reese did. Around 40 yards out, she rifled an effort in the top corner, a magnificent way to put your side back in the lead.
Two minutes from time, Wrexham were awarded a penalty after Buckley charged through the Northop defence and was brought down by a defender.
Kim Dutton took the penalty with aplomb and the Dragons doubled their lead to put the game out of sight.
