MATCH REPORT | Wrexham 0-1 Dover Athletic

A late goal from Dover Athletic saw them head home with all three points in a game that was characterised by poor passing and few chances.

Neither side imposed themselves on the game, with there rarely being more than two or three successful passes between players. Chances in the game could probably be counted on one hand, as Dover seemed happy to sit back and absorb any pressure than Wrexham threw at them.

Wrexham started the game brightly, with Paul Rutherford having the best chance ten minutes in. It was a good effort from the edge of the area, but just wide of the mark.

Wrexham's game plan was to play it along the ground, as opposition's physicality made challenging in the air a tough prospect. This made things difficult for Wrexham in the box, with Dover's imperious nature proving hard to break down.

Unfortunately for the fans, the first half was less than spectacular with neither side ever really challenging the other team's goal. Rutherford was probably the shining light in the first half, capped off with an audacious backheel nutmeg that very nearly led to a goal.

Wrexham nearly scored immediately after the restart, with Luke Summerfield heading over the bar from a Rutherford cross.

The Dragons proved they were still intent on attacking, with substitution Ben Tollitt nearly scoring with his first touch just before the hour mark.

Early hopes that the first half would be better than the first half soon evaporated though, with the game once again descending into a series of misplaced passes from both sides.

Summerfield briefely brought the game to life 63 minutes in, with a stinging shot from range after some in the box trickery by Bobby Grant. The shot was parried by Mitch Walker though, possibly his first proper action of the game.

Tollitt was very nearly the hero of the day 12 minutes from time after he fired a good shot just wide of the post.

Dover Athletic scored the winner in the 88th minute goal from Anthony Jeffrey, who cut inside and fired a shot past Rob Lainton.
