Wrexham AFC Women continue their unbeaten form at home as they battled to a hard fought 5-3 win against Mountain Rangers at Afoneitha Road today.
The game started off in a scrappy manner as both teams looked to attack quickly but the boggy surface held up play and forced a lot of long passes from both teams.
Wrexham took the lead in the 13th minute after Jodie Richards pounced on a mix up in the Mountain Rangers defence and her effort deflected off a defender and into the net to put the Dragons up.
However, Mountain Rangers did not allow their heads to drop and just three minutes later, they equalised after a great counter attack being finished off by Siwan Williams.
Wrexham were forced into an early substitution after Sarah Cowell went down with a head injury and was forced off for the rest of the game. Morgan Churchill entered the fray already carrying a slight arm injury but she did not let that deter her.
For the presiding 20 minutes, Wrexham looked the more likely to score as they pressuring the Mountain Rangers back line well and looked to win the ball high up the pitch however they just couldn’t get that break through.
The hard work paid off as a minute from half time, Savannah Palin fired in a free kick past Sara Lacey in the Mountain Rangers net to put Wrexham up going into half time.
HALF TIME – Wrexham 2-1 Mountain Rangers
Wrexham started the brighter in the second half with Megan Buckley having her effort tipped away by the keeper but from the following corner Wrexham got their third of the afternoon.
The corner was headed away straight to Kim Dutton just outside the box and she rifled it into the bottom right hand corner to give the Dragons some breathing room.
Just before the hour mark Mountain Rangers halved the deficit as Kreena Worbey beat the offside trap and one on one with the keeper she tucked it away in the far corner.
Ellie Quayle came on in the 66th minute replacing Teleri Williams and she pushed out into the right midfield position to offer fresh legs down the wing.
With 15 minutes to go, Mountain Rangers brought the game level after the offside trap was beaten again by Alishia Donohue and she rolled it past the onrushing Megan Wright in the Wrexham goal.
This however, did not dent the spirit of Wrexham and spurred them on to get two goals in two minutes with Lauren Reese firing in a long range effort spectacularly beating the keeper and Savannah Palin lashing in from an excellent cross from Lauren Reese.
Wrexham did not have it all their own was as Abbey Hughes, the Captain, had to make a last ditch tackle as Donohue ran through on goal and Megan Wright in goal pulled off an excellent save to deny a free kick from Heledd Evans.
Wrexham ran out 5-3 winners and will be pleased with how they bounced back from the equaliser. The young squad showed a lot of grit and determination to get the win here and put pressure on the league leaders.
