Wrexham AFC Women remain unbeaten at home after a 2-2 draw against Rhyl Reserves this afternoon writes Tom Crofts.
Sade Benjamin and Catrin Davies struck for the Lilywhites but the Dragons came from behind twice through Savannah Palin and Kim Dutton with the latter smashing home a free-kick to seal a point with seven minutes remaining.
An under-strength Wrexham side started the game slowly as Rhyl pressured Wrexham early and nearly got a goal within the opening exchanges but for poor finishing from the Rhyl attack. However, this was eventually punished as a mixup in the Wrexham defence was pounced on by Benjamin and she tucked it away with ease to put the visitors ahead.
Rhyl continued to pressure and forced Wrexham into long passes but they weathered the storm and regained control of the game and on the 24th minute mark, top goal scorer Palin got the equaliser for the Dragons. Jodie Richards got the ball out right and planted an excellent cross to the back post for Palin to smash home.
Five minutes later, Palin nearly got her brace as she fired an fierce effort towards goal but Lauren Jones in the Rhyl goal managed to get fingertips to keep it out.
Two minutes from time, Teleri Williams hit the side netting after a great through ball by Megan Wright but this was to be the last chance of the half as the teams went in deadlocked.
Half-Time: Wrexham 1-1 Rhyl Reserves
The second half created little chances until around 20 minutes from time when both teams opened up more and tried to push for a winner.
Rhyl got their noses in front after a great cross into the box was tapped home by Davies to put the visitors ahead in this close encounter.
This roused the hosts who attacked at will to get the equaliser with Reese, Dutton & Palin all having efforts go very close to equalising the game.
Seven minutes from time, Wrexham got their equaliser. Dutton with an excellent postage stamp free kick from around 30 yards out totally beat the keeper to get the Dragons back on level terms.
On the 90th minute mark, Dutton nearly completed the comeback as she fired an effort that looked destined to go in but it just whisked over the top of the crossbar.
Rhyl almost made Wrexham pay for their attacking intent, after a perfectly executed counter attack was foiled by Alex Jones in goal as she came out to deny what would have been a winner.
Wrexham will be pleased with their efforts but it is a case of what would have been if some of their chances would have been converted. They now have a break until after Christmas and will resume league action in January.
