The second of a bank holiday doubleheader is on the horizon as Bryan Hughes takes his Wrexham side to the north-east to face Hartlepool United.
Wrexham were last in action on Saturday where Barnet were the opposition at the Racecourse Ground. A whirlwind opening ten minutes was, in essence, the tale of the game as JJ Hooper put Wrexham ahead after just two minutes before Dan Sparkes levelled with a smart finish. Shaun Pearson was denied in the second half by a sensational Scott Loach save following a header from a corner. Avoiding defeat meant Wrexham are unbeaten in their last three games with a draw at Notts County coming after a win over FC Halifax Town.
Hartlepool are without a win in their last three games following a goalless draw on Saturday away at Chorley. Their last home game saw them come up against Bromley where goals from Gavan Holohan and Gus Mafuta weren't enough in a 3-2 defeat. Striker Gime Toure put the Monkey Hangers 2-0 up but two goals in as many minutes for AFC Fylde levelled things up on a frustrating afternoon for United.
Wrexham welcomed a return for Ben Tollitt on Saturday having joined the club on an initial short-term loan from Blackpool. Tollitt scored four goals in 14 games for the Dragons last season after a loan from Tranmere Rovers. The quick wide man came on for the final 20 minutes against Barnet for his first minutes of the campaign. Bobby Grant is also available having missed out through suspension and will give the manager a real selection headache for his front three.
Hartlepool forward Nicke Kabamba signed for Pools in the summer having had a loan spell last term. The powerful striker scored seven goals in 17 last season but is still looking for his first strike of the new campaign. Kabamba finds the net regularly at this level and is sure to be an important part of Hartlepool's season.
Our last meeting came back in March 2019 where a Josh Hawkes penalty separated the sides in a 1-0 United victory at Victoria Park.
Our first ever meeting came on August 27th 1921 with Hartlepool (or Hartlepools as they were known) running out 2-0 winners. Our first ever trip to Victoria Park came a week later on September 3rd where Wrexham this time took the spoils in a 1-0 win. This fixture is notable for some incredible scorelines with to many 6-0’s, 5-3’s, 5-0’s etc to mention! But two games stand out in particular. In January 1933 Wrexham hammered the Pools 8-1 at the Racecourse, and that seemed like it would never be beaten.
However, in March 1962 a rampant Wrexham ran out 10-1 victors whilst making history for the first ever Football League match to have three different hatrick scorers! Finally, Juan Ugarte bagged five goals against United back in 2005 in a spectacular 4-6 Wrexham win in the North-East.
Wrexham saw the return of Rob Lainton to the substitutes bench on Saturday whilst Jake Lawlor could miss out with injury. Manny Smith remains out of action.
