Wrexham’s Portugal tour opponents for 2019 will be Portuguese Primeira Liga side Portimonense, as Bryan Hughes’ side continue their build-up to the Vanarama National League season.

Wrexham won their opening pre-season friendly, beating Cefn Druids 4-0 at The Rock. JJ Hooper scored twice and Devonte Redmond and Akil Wright also netted. Having named two separate teams for the Cefn Druids match, playing a half each, Bryan Hughes then gave more game time to his senior players against Fleetwood – a late goal consigning the Dragons to a 1-0 defeat.

Portimonense are yet to start their pre-season programme. They have not played since a 2-0 defeat to fourth-placed Braga confirmed they would finish 12th in the Portuguese top flight last season.

Key Players

Wrexham’s new boys will get another run-out, with JJ Hooper and Devonte Redmond having already caught the eye since signing. Luke Summerfield returned to action against Fleetwood, while Shaun Pearson will lead the defence against the Dragons’ Portuguese top flight opponents.

For Portimonense, last season’s top scorer Jackson Martinez has returned after his season-long loan. Paulinho scored six times from attacking midfield, however. Winger Wellington Carvalho is another attacking option to look out for.

Head to Head

This will be Wrexham’s first match against Portimonense. The last Portuguese top flight to face the Dragons, of course, was Porto in the Cup Winners’ Cup in 1984 – the Dragons winning on away goals after a 1-0 home win and 4-3 away defeat over two legs.

Team News

Jake Lawlor and Jason Oswell are back in training and may play some part in the match, while Luke Summerfield returned to action last time out.
