Wrexham AFC Women remain undefeated this season after a spirited performance in blustery conditions at Ffordd Darwen against Rhyl Ladies Reserves.
Wrexham started the brighter of the two teams and in the first two minutes, Abbey Hughes had a chance inside the box after a mix up in the Rhyl defence however they managed to recover and clear the ball.
Lauren Reese’s chasing down of the Rhyl defence nearly paid dividends after pressure forced an error which put her through on goal however her shot was parried excellently by Amy Woodbridge in-between the sticks.
Wrexham continued to press in the opening ten minutes carving out several more chances, most notably a fierce shot by Jessie Griffiths which was blocked by the Rhyl defence out for a corner.
Rhyl’s first chance was saved well by Kathryn Jones after a counter attack after sustained Wrexham pressure. The corner that followed was saved well again by Kathryn Jones in goal and Wrexham regained possession.
12 minutes in, the Captain Abbey Hughes went down with an injury to her foot and was replaced by Jodie Richards who had scored in her last game against Amlwch Ladies.
Lauren Reese nearly got on the scoresheet around 20 minutes in after turning her marker in the box and rattling a shot but it was straight at the keeper.
However for all Wrexham’s pressure, Rhyl were the ones to break the deadlock around the 25 minute mark. Sade Benjamin found herself one on one with the keeper after being played through from the midfield and she tucked it away to make it 1-0 to Rhyl.
New signing Sarah Cowell did well to deny Rhyl a second after a last ditch tackle to knock the ball wide and stop a promising attack.
Sophie Hayward had to receive treatment for Rhyl after an excellent and strong tackle by Jessie Griffiths in the centre of the park to win the ball back for Wrexham.
Half time – Rhyl Ladies Reserves 1-0 Wrexham AFC Women
After half time Sarah Cowell moved into the midfield to offer a different outlet for the defence and this presence was felt through the half.
Wrexham continued to pressure and that finally paid off after a corner is whipped in by Savannah Palin and Jodie Richards unmarked in the centre tucks it away for another goal to her impressive season with 4 goals already in her opening 3 matches.
Five minutes later, Wrexham take the lead after another excellently taken corner by Savannah Palin is headed in Jessie Griffiths to put Wrexham 2-1 up.
Jessie Griffiths nearly put the game to bed after a clever lay off by Jodie Richards sets her up but the shot went just over the bar.
Just under 20 minutes from time, Rhyl equalised after a cross from Coleen Skeffington catches everyone off guard and hits the inside of the post and goes in.
Both teams tried to gain the lead however chances became few and far between and the game ended 2-2. Wrexham AFC Women gave a very good account of themselves and with two wins and a draw in their first three games they will be very happy with the start they have made.
