The latest addition to Dean Keates’ promotion chasing squad is Nicky Deverdics, who played against us recently for Hartlepool United.

He has signed an 18-month long contract, taking him through to the end to the summer of 2019.

A Geordie by birth, the 30-year-old midfielder has had a globe-trotting career in the game, that saw him start out as a trainee at St James’ Park, before stops locally with Gateshead and Bedlington Terriers.

He was then spotted by Gretna and switched to the Scottish club in March 2007, just in time to help them gain promotion to the SPL, where he then played 26 times before the fairy-tale club ran into financial problems and disbanded.

Nicky moved south to join Barnet in the Football League and played over 50 times in two seasons in north London, before heading back up the M1 and signing with Blyth Spartans in the Conference North, just in time for the start of the 2010/11 season.

A year later and he was off again on his travels, this time to Iceland and a season with BÍ/Bolungarvík, who were managed by Gudjón Thórdarson at the time, the former Stoke City, Barnsley, Notts County and Crewe Alex boss.

Back in the UK, there was a three-month spell with Alfreton Town before he returned to Nordic football when he joined Faroese top-flight club TB Tvøroyri in March 2013.

A year on and a short spell with Tadcaster Albion preceded his signing for Dover Athletic in July 2014 and the start of a successful two-season stint with the Kent club, playing over 75 times and rattling in 18 goals from midfield.

This form prompted Hartlepool United to recruit him in the summer of 2016 and 65 appearances later (plus a short spell on loan at Dover in February 2017) and he has now moved on again to North Wales.
