New signing Theo Vassell says Wrexham AFC feels just like home, after his first run-out in a Wrexham shirt in the pre-season friendly win against Cefn Druids.
Vassell lined up for the second-half – one of seven of the new signings to play in the 4-1 win – as he slotted in alongside Max Cleworth at centre-back.
It was Vassell’s first match since leaving Macclesfield Town at the end of the last calendar year, and the defender was glad to be back on the pitch.
“I’ve settled in really well,” he said after the game. “Obviously I knew a few of the lads before I came and it’s just like home really.
“I’ve gelled really well, and it’s not just me – a lot of the lads have gelled really well. A lot of the lads know each other and I think that’s a big factor that helps. We’ve got a good squad ready for this season.
“I was pleased to get back on the pitch for me personally. It’s my first game since November last year. It’s been ten months now since I played an actual competitive match so it was a good run-out for me to get back playing.
“The main focus is getting back the feel for the game, back on the pitch fitness-wise and to go from this.”
Vassell’s second-half appearance was long enough for him to showcase his versatility at the back, carrying the ball out of defence on a couple of occasions too.
But the former Macclesfield man will not be resting on his laurels after his pre-season run-out, accepting there is plenty more work still to be done.
“That’s the main point of my game,” he said. “It’s something I enjoy doing and I feel I’m good at, and it’s the strong point in my ability.
“I’m comfortable at centre-back but there will always be room for improvement, so that is what I need to work on in training going forward.
“We’ve seen the fixtures now, and now we’re at the point where we can’t wait for the season to start.
“We’re underway in pre-season. We’ve got a few games to go, where we’ll tidy up a few things and get fitter, and we’ll be ready to go on the third of October.”
