Stockton began his career with Tranmere as part of their youth set-up before heading out on loan to Vauxhall Motors in November 2011. His debut came as a late substitute in an FA Trophy victory over Marine.
During his time with the Motormen he scored three goals, including twice of Kidderminster Harriers and the winner against Worcester City.
In 2012 Cole was awarded his first professional contract with Tranmere having made his debut for the club in January of that year, in a 0-0 draw at home to Rochdale in League One.
Stockton’s first start for Tranmere came against Chesterfield in the League Cup where he scored his first Rovers goal in the 2-1 win in August 2012 at age 18. He went on to end the season with six goals in 36 appearances in all competitions.
After nine goals in his next 57 appearances Stockton was loaned out to fellow National League side Southport where he scored on his debut against FC Halifax Town in September 2015. He scored three goals in his ten games with the Sandgrounders.
He returned to Prenton Park in January 2016 playing twice before making a loan switch to Sky Bet League Two side Morecambe until the end of the season.
With the Shrimpers he made his debut against Plymouth Argyle at the Globe Arena before scoring his first goal a week later against Barnet. He made seven appearances scoing twice during his first spell with Morecambe.
He joined the Shrimpers a second time in July 2016 on loan until January scoring seven goals in 19 games before returning to Tranmere once more.
As Rovers gunned for promotion Stockton’s lit the touchpaper on some outstanding form towards the back end of the 2016/17 campaign scoring eight goals in the last 11 games of the season including three goals in the National League play-off semi-final first and second legs against Aldershot Town.
Unfortunately for Stockton, his side lost out in the final to Forest Green Rovers.
His form earned him a move to Heart of Midlothian in the summer of 2017 in the Scottish Premier League making his debut against Elgin City in the Scottish League Cup, whilst his first league game in August 2017 was against Kilmarnock.
Having failed to score for his new club Stockton was allowed to depart Hearts in January 2018, where he quickly signed for Carlisle United.
His first Cumbrians appearance came against Forest Green Rovers - the last club he faced in England before moving to Scotland – whilst his opening goal came a week later against Wycombe Wanderers.
He made a total of 12 appearance for United scoring once before re-joining Tranmere in the summer of 2018.
After a goal in his opening 20 appearances back at Prenton Park Stockton was loaned to Wrexham until the end of the 2018/19 season.
