Stockton-born Franks began his career with boyhood club Middleborough where he graduated to the first team in 2008.
Throughout his youth career he was capped at international level for England from Under 16’s to Under 20’s.
He made his debut in the Premier League on the final day of the 2008/09 season, where Boro fell to a 2-1 defeat away to West Ham United.
His first goal came in December 2010 in a 4-1 win over Doncaster Rovers in the EFL Championship, one of three goals in his 28 league games at the Riverside.
Following loan spells with Oxford United and Yeovil Town, Franks moved on to Hartlepool United in 2012 where he’d go on to make just shy of 150 appearances in all competitions over three years.
In 2015 he’d make his next switch, this time north of the border to Ross County in the Scottish Premier League. He would taste success with the Staggies winning the Scottish League Cup in 2016 at Hampden Park.
Following two seasons in Scotland he made a return to Victoria Park, re-signing with Hartlepool ahead of their first season in the National League.
However, due to their financial situation they couldn’t renew his contract in January 2018 and following interest from other clubs opted to join Wrexham on a deal until the end of the 2017/18 campaign.
