Wingmakers on top in a battle of the attack but Wrexham go through

31 October 2021

Nine goals in a thriller in Flintshire saw Airbus defeat Wrexham in the Genero Adran Trophy, but the Red Dragons still reached the last-16 on goal difference.

An Amber Lightfoot hatrick and Rosie Hughes strike weren't enough as Airbus came from behind to claim the points in the final group game.

But Pwllheli's narrow win against Llanfair United ensured that, despite the defeat against her former team, Wrexham progress to the last 16 after finishing second in the group.

Lightfoot, a product of the academy stole the show from a Wrexham perspective and was the one who kicked things off with a superb effort from distance to give Wrexham the lead after just five minutes.

Moments later, Wrexham doubled their advantage with a fabulous strike by Hughes to find the bottom left corner.

Lightfoot was at it again on 22 minutes, making it 3-0 and comforable for Mari Edwards' side with another fantastic strike.

However, Wrexham's large advantage would collapse as quickly as it was created, with three Airbus goals within 12 minutes marking the comback. On 32 minutes Rosie Lawrence headed home a corner before Tegan Hewitt's smart finish reduced the lead. With just moments to go until half-time, Natalie Harrison drew the home side level.

Half-Time: Airbus 3-3 Wrexham

The second half began in the same way it ended, both sides battling in monsoon like conditions. The deadlock was broken for the period when Lightfoot completed her hatrick with a great finish.

Airbus would from then on however, take control. Just after the hour mark Hewitt grabbed another leveller before scoring the deciding goal with 20 minutes to play.

Things wouldn't get any easier for Wrexham, as Erin Lovett was shown a straight red-card for kicking out after a challenge in the last quarter of an hour.

Both sides to their credit battled hard in horrendous conditions, but it was the Wingmakers who took the spoils.

Wrexham Line-Up: Jones, Rintoul, Lovett, Sharp, Buckley, Dutton (c), Dickens, Lightfoot, MacKenzie, Reese, Hughes
